Melanerpes formicivorus
Haystack-Blonquist Hastings Reservation
(17 June) too dark to see very much (I couldn't see bands or crowns at all) but I can guess that The 94 were in (one left after a bit, the 2nd stayed for several minutes) and the 2 88 were the ones hot on (9604's) tail.
Finally the last birds in the hole left; no eggs were ejected while I was watching.
425. The birds are still quite excited here. Someone flew to the hole several times while it was still too dark to tell who (s/he didn't go it) and now for the past several minutes there's been silent chasing going on in the tree next to me. Is this an intruder or mate-guarding or what?
435-450. Checked the hole. Both marked eggs are still intact.
530. 9604 entered hole-
537. 9 left, followed closely by both 88. 971 not seen at the hole during this time, although both 88 were close to it constantly.
555. There are at least 2 intruders have getting chased.
605. Time to go make sure she laid a 3rd egg.
620. Still the same 2 eggs! She hasn't laid yet! A bird appeared in the tree just as I reached the hole-I hope she hasn't been irrevocably scared off from laying here today.
629. 6 birds just flew into the granary!
640. 9604 entered hole again. Several intruders are still in the vicinity.
648. 9604 back at the hole briefly (I missed her exit).
655. A 9 was in the hole for 3 min: I have no reason to doubt that she was 9604 (she zipped right in, not like a bird visiting
