1984 1985 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lambert HNHR 1 November 1030. Watching: There are several birds here. First was a v. brief look at: 8 [illegible]/Red-LB (bands not seen v. well) #624. 1200. Leaving a hide here. There are several birds, but I'm obviously not seeing them. 4 November 930. Watching from hide. ① 8 624 again. 1015. ② 8 [illegible], probably #546 (came to tape). → yes: 8 LG/DB #546; and now ③ 9 Red-Yel/Red #720. All 3 breeders are here; no sign of 8 777 thus far. 1040. I've seen the 3 again at least once, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's still a 4th bird here. 1050. Whoopee! Here he is: 8 Bk/wh-LB #777. All here! 1100. Leaving. 1985 12 February 1045. Counted stores: Lambert FT: 1812 "Nest" tree: 630 Hastings VO 960 Hastings FT: 2252 There are lots of new holes in the bark of the 2 live trees; I do not remember them using the bark very much before. 13 April 1550. None seen in any holes here. 5 May 100. Nest is in some hole in the Mid-way tree ½ way down toward Keep Out. Babies (5!) are ~12 do, eyes opened. 8 May Injected the babies for DLW. 16 May Nest watch: 800-1100. Afterwards I transplanted 2 of the 5 babies to UA2. 17 May Nest watch 800-1100: No feedings. It was so bed that I stopped and checked the nest ½-way through, but the babies are fine.
