Keep Out
HNHR
23 April
1600. Nest check: 4 young (~2do) babies + 1 undeveloped egg.
3 May
Today I began the experiment to see how/if adults adjust
their feeding rates to the number of babies in the nest. Vas and
I came up early (615), set up blinds here and at Fanny Arnold,
and then did nest watches - she here and me at Fanny Arnold.
Here there was only the pair, as expected. I then did the
following: ① Weighed the babies here. There were 2, both rather
different in size.
② I left the bigger baby here and took the 2nd
(the one with only 1 leg)
③ I took a baby from UA2's nest.
④ I added both these babies to the 3 they had at
Fanny Arnold.
All babies were weighed and transferred between 1000-1100,
immediately following the watches.
Hence: today is Control Day #1. Tomorrow is
Experimental Day #2, in which KeepOut's brood has been
reduced from 2 to 1 and Fanny Arnold's increased from 3 to 5.
4 May
Experimental Day #2. Vas watched here again, 645-1000.
5 May
Control Day #3. Vas watched; 2 babies added
afterwards.
6 May
Experimental Day #4. Unfortunately, The Arnold was
completely socked in with fog this morning, at least when
we arrived. It was also cold. Nonetheless, Vas watched again
7 May
Control Day #5. Vas watched; Philip weighed w/ Lesola.
18 May
Banded the babies as #1016-1017. The no-leg one is far behind and
his leg is gone almost up to the hip, but he's hanging in there.
