Melanerpes fomcicivorus
Black Oak
19 February 1030. Counted stores: Central area: 1315
Fallen tree 201
Side area 595
Doing well, considering the many holes they've lost when
the fallen tree finally fell to the ground!
1120. Up at the "Corral" by Bianca are 3 birds, who
have now flown off toward Black Oak. 1 is 80r/DB-or,
the same (as yet unidentified) bird I saw here last
week.
8 April Watched roosting here tonight (Philip & Kim). ~5 birds; possible nest.
9 April Set up ambush, but nobody roosted in the hole. Over in
the next hole, however, are 8 eggs - 299 for sure.
They wouldn't roost in the rigged hole.
1 May 1345. Net set up in front of hole. They have had babies
here for some time, but I haven't opened the hole to
see how many.
4 May 700. Net up again. Caught 1 bird by 1200: 05744
This bird, an '82 nestling, abandoned in Sept. 1983
and hadn't been seen since!
16 May 730. Banded the 6 babies here as #1004-1009.
18 May 1115. Actually caught 1 of the ub 99 in & the net set up
in front of the hole: now #1025.
3 June 1600. Bird in the hole in the central area; could be a 2nd nest.
9 June Mark watched here this morning and saw lots of birds, including
#1025 and 2 other ub 99. Hence, as feared, there is
apparently a 3rd # here!
No sign of a 2nd nest.
