1984 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 HNHR 8 September 905. Watching from the truck. Noone in any holes. 925? ?wn/13 #654 in The big Valley Oak on the E side of the road. 935, leaving. With an unbanded ? here I think we'll go for an ambush soon. 15 September 545. After several days of watching here an ambush netted only 3654. 3 November 915. 3654 preening up the hill above R3/MacFlat. Caught 8792 tonight by himself in the granary; We held him overnight and let him go the next morning with a radio collar on- 12 November Still no success at catching The ?, but we have found several new holes by following & tracking down 8792- who has now roosted in 6 different holes during the last 6 nights! 17 November Still no success, despite constant efforts. Last night Phillip & I tracked 8792 to an area by The old dying VO toward Finch. This morning we checked it out and found him - dead - apparently eaten by a hawk as his brain was pecked open and eaten while the rest of him was intact. Phillip had last tracked him on the 15th, so he almost certainly was eaten yesterday! There were also claw Marks (punctures) in the body... 8 December ? here still unbanded, and I have no idea where They roost.
