1985 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacFlat HNHR 22 April **Group Update** Lets redo this one. Since Ron says there wasn't a group here last spring, there wasn't. Lets have all 3 form the group 0 Sept. (18, 29#, all unbanded). The 29# presumably got banded (985, 988) 30 April 1920. Watched for an hour before dusk and at roosting, but other than seeing birds here I didn't find out much.. 14 May Another unsuccessful attempt to find the nest here this morning. 2 birds were in view regularly, however I did not see 3 together. 16 May Found a hole where 1 bird (at least) is roosting. It could also be a nest... 20 May 1100. Finally found the nest: it's in a live oak on the PO Hill side just up from the burned snag, ~40m from the road. I think the babies are pretty old and that it needs to be opened soon. Like to day. 1800. Opened the nest: 3 babies, ~16 do (guess). 30 May Injected the babies for DLW and banded them as #1072-1074. 31 May Bled the babies today (but lost 1072's sample!). June After bleeding the babies yesterday I put an ambush up and - amazingly enough - the ub 8# was in it this morning! He is now [illegible]. I released him at 0430. 1530. Bled #1072 again, but not the others. 16 October 900. Trying to watch here. 910. 08#-wn/m #1082. Birds have stones here. ② 6# red/Mv-wm #1073 ③ 8# or-Yel/M #1074 Also an ad# but she got away without me getting her bands.
