1984 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacFlat HNHR 15 September This morning it appeared as though there might be 3 birds here, as I had 3 in view while the (apparent) R3 birds were down the road (and also up the side of PO Hill). Then, this evening, I found another roost hole where ≥1 bird went in. Thus, this group would appear to be active! 3 November I ambushed at the hole today and caught 1 unbanded ♀, a 1st-yr bird, now #985. When I let her go she was immediately greeted by at least 1 other bird. Thus, although I don't know of any stores here, I'm pretty confident there is a group here. This group was apparently recolonized this fall (it seems very unlikely that she's a baby from here...). 4 November OK. We are going to reinstate this group as of 0 April 1984 with an unbanded pair, who bred and fledged 1 baby, now #985. However! Ron claims there was not a group here last spring, so perhaps I'd better back off here and see what happens (birds are not really seen here, even now) and I can't find anyone roosting here). 7 November A bird roosted in the '83 nest hole here tonight. 12 November Still not positive what's up here. Phillip saw the same 3 birds I did a few days ago (ub pair + #985), but they are not hanging around regularly. Plus, #792 from R3 roosted in the hole I caught her in last night. However, at least every few days a bird does roost in the roost tree, so until I catch them I can't be sure what's happening.
