1984 1985 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road I Hastings Reservation 8 September 730. Back on the job! Watching from the hide with Kim Sullivan, to census, check for nests, and attempt a vigilance study. 745. 2 birds landed, briefly. ①♀wn/DB/M #383. Stayed to eat part of an acorn. Apparently no heavy storing here yet; 750. ②♂wn/M #579 in the sycamore by the road. ③♂wn/B/k #580. 820. ④♀DB-w/wn/wn #269; ⑤♀M/DB #804. Eating green acorns; no storing yet. #269 looks blind in her left eye(!) But she's still here. She keeps head-cocking to the left a lot apparently to compensate for it. 830. ⑥♂ -or/wn-or #486. 850. Leaving. Birds are not into storing yet, but are eating green acorns. Everyone except ♂672 is here, and he does appear to be gone. 1985 2 February 1545. Counted stores: Valley Oak: 1332? 2702 Sycamore: 1370 This is probably a conservative estimate; both these trees are loaded with acorns. 6 April! Missy watched here today and saw 3 unbaunted birds cavorting along with the residents - the only conceivable explanation for which would seem to be another fall nest that we missed. Argh. It also, of course, means that we have a whole slew of new unbaunted birds to nab. Fall (1984) [nest apparently]
