1985 Waldor D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blountville HNHR (21 April) j944. Not seen after banding. Now: also add L66 bird who presumably fledged from a fall 1984 nest that we missed, and is now 8989. 22 April 1700. Checked nest: 5 eggs, pretty fresh. One had a small crack in it, however. 2 May 1600. Checked nest: 2 babies, 3 eggs, just hatching. At least 1 of the 3 eggs won't hatch - it looks like it died as an embryo, maybe while hatching. The other 2 may, however. 28 May Banded the 4 nestlings here as #1054-1057. They all looked great! 20 June Mark found a 2nd nest here (hole above the 1st nesthole) and reports 5 fresh eggs. 1 July Nest empty'. Failed. (Mark also reports 1 egg missing on 27 June). See Mark's notes for details. 18 August Just before leaving for France I saw a bird here, climbed up, and noted 4 eggs. Also, lots of acorns remain here. 15 September Banded 3 babies here, looking fine. This is by far the latest summer nest (or earliest fall nest) we've ever had. 4 December After several failed attempts I finally caught The unbanded & plus 2 others in the nest hole in an ambush this evening. I held them overnight and processed them all in the morning. & is now A41185, other 2 caught were 8769 and 8989.
