Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack HNHR
2 May 1500. 4 babies plus 1 undeveloped egg in The nest: apparently 5 hatched and 1 went bye-bye already.
7 May 945. Did DLW on the babies. Also watching now to try and nab an adult coming to The nest while the water equilibrates.
25 May 1300. Banded the 4 babies as #1043-1046.
29 May Set 2 ambushes up here after finding 2 roost holes last night.
30 May 430. Missed the bird in the nest (undoubtedly the ub & I was after) but caught 2 38 together in the Blue Oak hole: 8972 and 8857. (The babies were still in nest.)
Hence:
**Group Update**
8954. Apparently gone by 2 April; last seen 31 Jan: DA. 1 March ± 1 month
8857. Obviously still here. Reinstated.
9 June Set an ambush late at the nesthole. j1046 was inside and failed to flush.
28 June 800. Found the 2nd nest, over in the Blue Oak (same hole as usual). There are 3 babies ~2do (1 looks newly hatched and probably won't make it) along with 2 unhatched eggs (1 developed but unzipped. The other damaged and dry); thus, it looks like another clutch of 5.
