1985 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Horsetail HNHR 25 May After seeing suspicious-looking birds here over the past several weeks I put Stanback over here watching. He subsequently reported 2 unbanded birds (trait!) with a nest in a live oak right above the 1st crossing! I opened it this afternoon and they have 4 eggs, which they are incubating. Meanwhile Kim checked my granary segments and reports no stored acorns. Hence, I suspect these birds are living off acorns which are still on the live oaks. 28 May Noone's been in the hole the last couple of days, so we checked it today at 1215: 4 eggs; [illegible] stone cold - apparently they have abandoned, although the birds were in the vicinity and vaguely upset at me so I don't know what's up. In any case, I measured the eggs: ① 26.6 × 19.3 ② 25.9 × 17.9 ③ 27.2 × 18.6 ④ 25.8 × 19.2 These 2 birds will be added (founded) as of "0" May. 5 June Hank has watched here twice since 28 May and seen no sign of anyone here... Have they abandoned? 2 July Mark's watched here several times and saw birds on 19 June, but things have been slow since. It may be abandoned now! See his notes for details. 9 November Two (+?) birds roosting in the nest hole here (!) 18 November Tried to ambush here but string broke. 20 November 730. This time I got them: 1♂ and 1♀, probably adults. They were taken last night, banded this morning (♂1183; ♀1184).
