Melanerpes formicivorus
1800
(29 April) one almost certainly laid by 9787 (9193 has small chance
of having laid it). Unfortunately, egg#1 now has a small
dent which I think I inadvertently put in it. Tomorrow
I can superglue it, but in any case this egg (probably
9193's only one so far) is possibly messed up due to me.
920. Leaving.
30 April
630. Watching. None in hole.
646. With 9787 at the hole, 8770 came, she left, then 8771
came and starting beating the shit out of 8770! We're
talking violence, while 8770 was chattering the whole
time. This continued in & out of the hole for 20s
until 8770 went in the hole again, 8771 left. 8770 then
left.
648. 9193 entered hole. 658. Leaves.
700. Next check: still the 5 eggs. Egg#1 (the dent) superglued.
715. Watching.
722. 9193 in again. 726. Leaves.
731. 8770 in, out; 9193 in. 740. Leaves. 743. In 749. Out.
800. 8771 in now for 10 min - starting to incubate? 803. Leaves.
813. 8770 in (not following a 9). 820. Left. 88 are no longer
following, apparently.
830. 9(193) inside. 833. Both 88 come to rest.
834. 9785 comes. 8770 leaves, 8771 enters, 9785 enters.
8771 leaves. 9785 in now at 834).
838. 8771 at hole (guarding?) 842. 8771 at hole again, goes
in briefly. 9785 still inside.
944. 9 leaves. 9 in, now out.
