1985 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 1800 HNHR 23 April 620. Watching. Noone in hole. 706. 9787 in hole briefly. 710. 9787 in again. 722. 9 leaves. Hole check: 1 runt egg! She did it! 733. watching. 840. 9785 went in briefly; just after she left 9193 went in. At that point 9787 came to the hole, and was at the side of the hole as 9193 tossed the runt egg. 9787 then entered the hole. So! Today's activity: 9787 laid a runt, tossed by 9193. The "guarding" relationships here, as based on activity at the hole, are: 9193 < 8770 9785 < 8771 9787 < Noone That should be it for the day. 9193 & 9785 still not laying again. (I will check the hole before leaving to be certain.) 24 April 635. Watching. Noone in hole, apparently. 652. 9787 in, followed by 9193; latter left after <1 min. 659. 9787 left. Next check: 1 Normal egg (laid by 9787). 710. watching. 834. 9787 entered, followed by 9193; 9 left - almost certainly 9787, followed immediately by the egg toss by 9193. So: once again for egg#12: 9787 laid, 9193 tossed. 25-26 April Philip watched. On the 25th, both 9785 and 9787 were in but only 1 egg was laid; Philip guesses by 9787. It was tossed by 9193; both 9193 and 8771 ate it. On the 26th, 9787 laid, followed by 9193; both these eggs were tossed by 9785. (laid a runt)
