1982 1983 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomiceivorus Chonge HNHR 22 October 830. Flushed 1 bird in coming up to count stores: 706 2 November Was here at roosting but saw nothing. 16 November 1410. Watching from hide. 9 in granary; this bird appears blind in her left eye. At best it's exceedingly dark. 1425. The 9 flew across the canyon to a large Blue Oak, joining a 8 there. Both are now there eating acorns, and appear to be unbanded (it is a long ways away, however). 1515. Leaving. No sign of the jun, but another watch is certainly in order as they are not hanging around much. 1983 4 January 1330. Counted stores: 666; essentially no change from October. Also took a sample of 25 acorns from the granary. The sample was frozen immediately. 10 May 1745. Took the 7 eggs out of the nest (6 normal, 1 runt) and plugged the incubation monitoring equipment into one of the normal eggs that I inadvertently broke while getting it down out of the hole. 11 May 1515. The thing's working, but noone has been in the nest since yesterday (I have a constant 19+ reading). Have they abandoned the nest? 13 May 730. Checked the recorder: working fine, birds have been incubating constantly for some time! 16 May 1025. Took down the recording equipment, sacrificing the 1 egg. The probe was a little to one side but otherwise well inside the egg; I don't know why it was messing up as it did the last few days.
