1985 Welter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Y HNHR 1 April 1800. Quick stop here: ①♂ Red-DB/Wh #669; ②♀ M / cght-da ? thought it was #971 but I'm not sure now; ③♀ Grn-Wh/M #675. 1815. Leaving. 13 April 1600. Checked all the known holes here. 21 April **Group Update** j969. Last seen 26 Jan by Philip (unsexed); gone by 30 March; DA 28 Feb. ± 1 month. 24 April 1530. Slipped it in on us: a new hole way up in the sycamore just below (6") the old Magpie nest. 5 babies ~2 do + 1 egg, pipped but probably defunkt. 6 May 1420. Did DLW on the babies... 8 May Philip ambushed this morning at The School Hill hole. The helper ♂ got out, but he caught ♀675 and ♂754. We injected both of them with DLW, glued transmitters to them (the ♀ got a 2gm one: 1/10/4.5; the ♂ a 4gm one: 3/2/2.5) and released them at 700. We are now going to do time-activity budgets on the ♀ for most of the day, and will try to catch her tomorrow morning (along with the ♂). This of course means that ♂669 spent the night in the nest. 9 May 800. Watching from a blind with a trap set up at the hole. 830. Got the ♀!!! A bonafide sample of 1 for DLW! 840. Back for awhile, just in case we can bag the ♂ too. 945. Giving up for now. Only ♂669 fed (about 25 times!) This afternoon, We came down and saw the ♀ feeding again, so they should be set for tomorrow.
