Melanerpes formicivorus
Chongo HNHR
1 October Amazingly enough, this group (which we didn't even
know existed again) has a nest in the '83 hole in the
Blue Oak granary. Today I went up with Philip to check
it:
(0) #981
(2) R-LP #982
80.1 (65)
55.2 (44)
4 October 1645. Banded: 82.9 (83)
65.4 (58)
Philip caught both adults here on 3 October: They
are now #979 & 980 (both were ambushed at the nest!).

30 January 1630. Counted stores: 471. Not bad, given the poor shape of
the tree here. No birds seen in passing.
1 April 1700. Came out and set up a blind but it's all quiet-
no sign of birds anywhere.
2 April 805. Watching.
815. The tape brought an u6♂ and ♀ who were both soon
chased out by (1) ♂ / 2a-yel #979 and (3) ♀
red-lb/m #980.
820. Both here again to chase out u6♀.
835. Same 2 birds again. Looking as though neither of
their babies made it (or else both dispersed - after all, it
is April!).
840. The pair may have just copulated - the ♂ was
above the ♀ flapping his wings for ~5s.
845. Leaving. Those birds do have stores remaining.
