December 12 Almost completely overcast; lower seas (few whitecaps) wind NE, 13½ k., swells NE - 5 feet. Scattered swells. 0700 - started watch 0734 - sufficient light for observations 0802 - set plankton detail 0830 - Re-detailed Tropicbird - 1 E 0840 - secure d plankton detail 1015 - small Pterodroma 1 SE 1022 - Red-footed Booby 1 around ship 1029 - Shearwater/Petrel 1 NW 1112 - Red-footed Booby 1 SE adult 1225 - White-necked Petrel - 1 NW 1330 - change course to 320° 1545 - unidentified bird seen by watch officer. 1615 - Golden Plover - 1 NW 1625 - Wedgetail 1 NE 1755 - Sooty Tern 1 S 1830 - change course to NE 1845 - Tropicbird on fairy tern - 1 SW 1000 yards to port. 1900 - bird watch secured. December 13 High winds directly into bow. Lower seas with fewer whitecaps. Partly cloudy with lower swells. Still much sea return.
