the mice with a shot pistol. Sometimes
I found the mice in old bird nests.
These mice are probably Oryzomys. In
the canal like swamps leading away
from the lake I saw raccoon (Procyon)
tracks.
August 22, 1925 - A very
pleasant day. Last night it
rained so hard that most of my
mouse traps were tripped. I shot
a variegated Squirrel which was near
some colol-palms.
August 23, 1925 - Warm
in the morning. Mouse traps that
were set near the water edge of
a swamp which leads a winding
course back through the open
forest had three mice (Oryzomys).
The traps were set under mimosa
brush some of which was dead
and formed a trashy brush
up through which the green brush
was growing. Under the mimosa
on the other side of the forest were
conditions were similar except
that the swamp wasn't there, I caught
two more Oryzomys and a wolly
mouse. The ante had eaten the two
Oryzomys and had started on the wolly
mouse. These traps were baited with
greens of corn. In the open swamp
forest where the trees averaged about
60-70 ft. high I shot an Anteater
(Tamandura tetradactyla - ). This
specimen was located on a horizontal
limb about 53 ft. from the ground. She
was lying perfectly motionless on
