Puerto del Triunfo, Dept, Usulutan, Salvador.
December 28, 1925 - January 25, 1926
Puerto del Triunfo, an old
deserted sea port, is located on the
north shore of a network of tidal
channels along the coast line of the
department of Usulutan. For
several years the port has been
deserted. There are three chief
reasons why Puerto del Triunfo
has changed from a sea port
into a fishing village. First, because
a number steamers sank in the
main channel, the masts of which
are still sticking out of the water;
second, because it would be
necessary to contract for expensive
dredging to open the channel for
larger steamers; third, because the
railroad company chose to run
their line to La Union in preference
to Puerto del Triunfo. Thus one now
sees what were once well kept
buildings constructed of northern
lumber shattering into ruin and
mouldering away under the inroads
of termites. Many of the buildings
are deserted, while in some rooms
are occupied by natives but most of the inhabitants
of the village live in their huts
constructed of poles and zacate. The
steel pier still stands but is rapidly
rusting. There are perhaps two
hundred people now living in
