Mt. Cacaguatique, Dept., San Miguel, Salvador Nov., 21, 1925 - Dec., 23, 1925 Odocoiles - Venado The natives reported deer to be found commonly in the Mt. Cacaguatique region, but I met with them only once, at night. I followed a trail which led up along one of the canyon ridges, at times it found myself in the coffee and again in the oaks until I at last reached an altitude of nearly 4000 feet. Here I came into an area where the brush had been cleared away and fresh green sprouts and weeds were nearly waist high. This was sub-tropical vegetation. While following the trail through this patch a greenish eye flashed some distance ahead and was lost again instantly. I worked forward as quietly and so rapidly as I could. When within about thirty five yards of the spot where the eye flashed it flashed again but at this time there were two. Slowly the long shovel like ears of a doe became visible then I knew one of my specimen. I could barely make out the out line of her back but I aimed for behind her front leg, and fired. Down she went but was up again and off like a flash. I heard other bleers snort rapidly and crash off toward the oaks. Some minutes later I shined two
