Large Agouti - Cotuga
Large Agouties were found throughout the coffee region in close association with the dense brush from which I found many well worn paths leading out into coffee. No. 10784 was shot just at the edge of the brush and coffee near our camp in the late evening. Nos. 10815 and 10844 were shot in a little trail which led out of the dense brush into the coffee. Mr. van Rossem related that while watching this path at dusk one evening he saw an Agouti come out of the brush and upon hearing a rustle of leaves in his direction it sat up with its back perfectly perpendicular and from this position he shot it.
Early one morning I saw two Agouties dash off through the coffee toward this trail. They ran very much like young shoats. No. 10854 was shot in the coffee by our helper. One stomach examined contained plant pulp, and two others contained green banana pulp.
