Mt. Cacaguatique, Dept., San Miguel, Salvador Nov., 21, 1925 - Dec., 23, 1925 Black shrew The Black shrews I found confined to the sub-tropical zone and not always in association with water and damp regions. No. 10730 was taken about 30 ft. from a mountain stream. The trap was set in a canyon under the edge of a rock in a banana grove. Carefully inspecting the place I found a small round hole which approximately three feet away which led down under the rock at about a forty five degree angle. Nos. 10746 & 10752 were trapped densely in dense tangled brush on a mountain side through which I had to force my passage. Here I found many tiny runs or paths running in all directions under dead twigs, through roots, and in the open shade of the brush. Frequently along these runs I found little round holes in the ground some leading straight down and others at an angle. Nos. 10751, 10753 & 10767 were taken on the brushy bank of a stream in their runs among dead leaves. Here the ground was perfectly dry. The specimens taken nearest to a stream were Nos. 10832 & 10861. They were trapped among moss covered rocks and rotten logs where upon close inspection I found their runs in the sub-tropical zone at an altitude of 4000 ft. I caught No. 10883 at the base of a tree in dead brush and leaves among weeds, and No. 10884 at the same altitude
