Gopher - Saltuza
Gophers were found commonly by me in this region but very difficult to trap. Their workings were found most abundantly in banana groves where they obviously feed on banana roots. Here they had many short terminating laterals, in which they would cover up traps as fast as they were set. Some of these laterals had short branches and thus many traps were covered where I thought I had them in the main run. The main tunnel never ran straight but might be found zigzagging off in any direction.
I failed to take my trap when I caught No. 10718, with the result that I had to dig about eight feet along to get my specimen, not to mention how far I dug in the opposite direction first. This trap was set in a tunnel along the upper edge of a canyon on the border of a banana grove. No. 10803 was taken in a heath grassy patch, No. 10818 in the coffee, and No. 10847 in a weed patch. I found no signs of this species in the forest zone but high up along the mountain side in association with coffee and brush my feet were continually breaking through the soft dirt into their tunnels. Specimens taken were not as pugnacious as Geomys. Stomachs examined contained root fibers.
