2007 2008 Walter Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Kynoll HNHR 17 May 1300. New hole high in the locust tree on the far side of the barn: 5 eggs, fresh. Hole tagged #696. Tree tagged #6905. 26 May 1000. Checked hole: still 5 eggs, still look unincubated. Probably all infertile. Measured them: ① 26.1 × 20.2 ② 25.7 × 20.3 ③ 25.4 × 20.3 ④ 24.6 × 20.3 ⑤ 24.9 × 19.6. 1 June 945. Nest empty. Lots of stones still here. 14 June 730. 2nd nest in hole # tagged #289. 5 eggs, look fresh (or infertile again!) 22 June 1715. Still 5 eggs - still not developing. ① 25.4 × 19.6 ② 25.2 × 19.6 ③ 25.9 × 19.1 ④ 25.5 × 19.4 ⑤ 25.1 × 19.4. Still lots of stones; all they need are some fertile eggs! 30 June 1000. Still 5 eggs, still infertile. Pulled them, just in case they are willing to try again. Still stones here, of course. 12 July 815. Bird in 1st nest hole (#696): 4 eggs, fresh (or yet again infertile). ① 26.4 × 20.0 ② 25.5 × 19.6 ③ 25.7 × 19.9 ④ 26.1 × 19.5. Try #3. 2008 4 July 1400. Bird in high hole (#696): 4 eggs, fresh (whatever that's worth). ① 25.6 × 20.5 ② 25.8 × 20.0 ③ 25.5 × 20.0 ④ 25.0 × 20.0. 5 July Jamie caught 84204 in a net at the water trough across from the lower barn.
