2005 2006 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus UAZ HNM (1 July) That β wasn't such a good idea after all. Bummer. Apparently they were left the one night and bred- something I figured could happen but didn't think would. 11 July 450. Ambushed all 3 of the known holes here, getting none in any of them! 6 Sept. A few (old) stores still here. 2006 6 March Stores: yes. 12 May A few but only a few, stores appear to remain here. 24 May 1000. Opened hole 5610 (last year's [2nd] nest): empty, but in good shape. Bird in new hole down in the lower tree. 26 May 1130 New hole opened, tagged #674. 4 eggs. Incubated ① 24.4 × 17.5 ② 24.0 × 18.9 ③ 24.2 × 18.2 ④ 24.2 × 19.1 (not developing or infertile). 4 June 1015. Checked nest: still 4 eggs. Cold. Abandoned? 7 June HND Eggs still there & cold. Apparently abandoned. 20 June Still some stores here. 24 June 600; Caught 2 birds in the old nest hole down the hill: #3833 and a new β (but banded).
