2005 Walter D Koenig 2006 2007 Melanerpes formicivorus Sch. Hill West HNMK 1 May 1230. In my first trip up here this spring, I find stored acorns and a bird in the (old) hole! 4 fresh eggs. ① 26.8 × 19.0 ② 27.0×19.5 ③ 27.2 ×19.7 and ④ 25.7 × 19.0. This last egg was a bit cracked (probably by me); I discarded it and left the other in tact 3. 14 May 1600. Kids: Yes. Didn't open it to find out how many, however. Band ~ 1 June. 19 May 830. Dragged the 20' ladder up here and set the ambusher. 2 kids, ~7 do, + 1 developed but unbandaged egg. 21 May 1530. Bird in hole, even though the ambusher had fallen, so I pulled it and got a banded 8. 25 May 1600. Trying for the NOBA ③. 1710. Got her! 29 May Banded ④ 6(c) the 2 kids. 8 Sept. No old acorns here, but 100 or so nice fresh green ones! 2006 9 May 1345. No stores, but 4 birds here, quite interested in the tree. One was ⑧ or /or ?; at least one other was banded. None in the hole, however. 2007 14 May Looks pretty deserted here: no stores or birds. 29 May None in hole, but a bird did flush from the gramany!
