2005 Waldir D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacFlat LWHR 18 Apr 7 1600. There are both stored acorns (!) and a bird in one of the old holes here !! Hole is The highest one in the gremany here - not the tree That's been used for several years. It has 4 eggs, perhaps 4-5 days incubated. Hole is now tagged #906. Eggs: ① 25.0 x 19.3 ② 24.6 x 19.1 ③ 25.2 x 19.2 ④ 24.3 x 18.8. Who are the birds here? 29 April 1130. Checked The nest: 3 kids, ~4 do, + 1 unhandled egg. Band ~ 16 May. The only bad news is That I kind of messed up one of The kids in reopening The hole. But he could make it - 10 week was I more or less took the skin off his neck. So I left him and hoped for the best. 3 May 1430. Nest failed: all 3 kids dead in nest. Actually, They were kind of buried down there, Which was weird. Could this have been a result of my screw-up? Possibly, although I believe Lisa had them feeding after 29 April. Oh well. I cleaned it out and left the ambusher. 28 June 1400. Found the nest here: it's very high in The large sycamore 15 m W of The road just N of old R3. Got up There to find a single kid, close to fledging. Unfortunately, this very possibly means I missed others, but at least I know the hole and have a string up to it! 10 Sept. No stores here, either in The burned tree or The traditional tree.
