2006 2007 2008 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes fuscicollis 42K HWR (26 June) hole here to block the knothole (2nd) entrance had not fallen out - it had fallen in, thus blocking the hole itself to a significant extent? So this is why they weren't in here this spring. Is it why they failed to nest altogether? I moved the stick out of the way and cleared out the hole, which was full of miscellaneous lichen, wood pieces, etc. I wonder how long it will take them to discover this and come back? 2007 26 April Cleaned out hole 1349, which had a mouse nest in it. It was partly blocked up again. 13 May 1550. Opened the new hole in the live oak next to (and facing) the road that the birds roosted in last night: in good shape but empty. 24 June 1408. Caught the NOBA & here. Only saw the ♂ (3675) otherwise. Nesting in their old traditional hole, by the way (#1349) 29 June 1030. Banded + bled the 3 kids. Still stays here. 2008 23 June 1515. Checked nest: inside of cut had fallen in! A broken egg shell inside, but nothing else. I fixed the cavity. Stares? Yes.
