2007 Waltair Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 5 1500 (18 March) features - worn remiges, sharp primaries - but his head sure looked more adultish. I just can't be sure. He looks more 24 than 34 but The 1st hypothesis is a whole lot more appealing than the 2nd (Presumably if it is the 2nd, the Z 88 are unrelated.) In any case, we released the 2 88 at about 0630 and now I'm here watching. Between 0800-0900 I'll keep track of all vocalizations. I've seen birds here but basically it's all quiet. If an intruder did come by, s/he left pretty quietly. I should mention that ?4025, who we did not catch, could have been in the hole with everyone else. I couldn't reach everywhere which is why we had to come back at dawn to get 84259 in the bag, 808. ? Reb / #4127. (2) ? M/D8-WM(W) #4025. (3) For-LA/M #4125. All here! 845. Power struggle going! Getting the 88 905. Good PS - ~10 birds here! Releasing the 88. 2 May 1100. Opened last year's hole: 1 fresh egg: (1) 24.9 x 20.0 Cavity 4048. 20 May 1215. Came to do a hatching check, but it would appear that they threw out or otherwise lost the 1st nest and have laid a 2nd: 7 fresh eggs! (1) 25.8 x 20.2 (2) 23.8 x 19.6 (3) 25.1 x 20.0 (4) 25.3 x 19.2 (5) 24.9 x 20.1 (6) 25.9 x 20.4 (7) 25.3 x 19.2. EHT now ~ 30 May.
