but not nesting, one sparrow of Marsh Sparrow sort was seen and one Mockingbird heard, This seemed to be the bird population as observed. Some of the frigate seem to have [illegible] heads and bills some white under the head but black bill and top head. Which are young and which are of [illegible] hours. Very few full black males are seen. Frigates were seen swooping and skimming the surface and occasionally dipping the head (to pick up food superficially). We left the harbor about five after much maneuvering out around the sand bar and break waters. The channel is only about 2 boat widths and right in surf nearly. July 4. Spent the whole day sailing across the Golfo de Tampico and passed Champerico in the afternoon. There is a long low coastal plain here as was not the case anywhere in Mexico. The mountains rise high in the background.
