June 19 Fri Boarded the Guerrero at 5 P.M. and remained in San Pedro harbor all night loading freight and repairing the boilers. We have a very good room with ample space for skinning. There are many gulls about the harbor, all in full breeding plumage. There is a notable red spot near the tip of the yellow- bill. The wing has a white spot in the outer 3 primaries. These birds are all Western Gull and there are probably no others about at this time. June 20 Sat. Left San Pedro at 10 a.m. There was the usual coast fog until about noon. The sea was very calm, there being little difference between harbor and "el alto mar". We had quite an escort of gulls all day and they were still in the rigging at dark. About noon we began to see Petrels while still within sight of Catalina Island. They followed at some distance in the wake of the boat. There were approximately 20 birds following the ship. None of these had any white tail patch or any sort of white
