like it was just able to fly
and I wondered at the time
that such a jacana could
fly at all. Van brought in a
specimen. Criketus for the
genus.
Several gallinules were
flushed from a patch of
thick gum. Lachega or hyacints
which seems to be their
favorite color. One full
grown young was seen.
The Shore birds were
the most numerous feature.
Black Neck Stilt, Spletn and
Lesser Yellowlegs, Shuff-trystal
and several common species
such as least and spotted were
present.
"Van" finally shot the
large long-tongue we saw
once before and found it to be
a skimmer. It was striking
the beak into the water as
it flew about in circles. It
had fish in the crop. The
upper jaw was found to be
jointed with the lower mandible
at the base and a well of
developed set of muscles formed
to move it.
The Red Wags were present in
large numbers in the meadows
