Aug. 8. I went Jacana hunting again while the folks hunted the nearby marsh. As we pulled in to the fringe of floating growth we flushed several Least Gulls. There were Swan nests in the near vicinity all with fresh eggs and some incomplete sets. The nests were all covered over even in the case of the incomplete sets. The nests, about a 1/2 across are only 6-8' across above water and are not clearly seen. The birds are quite wary and fly more often than dive. I probably due to the thick water growth thus which they couldn't swim very fast. They leave little paths thru the water growth which all converge toward the nest. The nests are swiftly beside of the surrounding floating plants. Every set of Jacana were taken and twice as many more raised up because of incubation.
