Melanerpes fomcicivorus
Plaque
(3 October) found quite a few newly stored acorns, all of which have
most likely been stored within the last several days.
The oak they were harvesting from is one of those that
I've been getting samples from. Actually, I soon
discovered that the tree I've been getting the samples
from is immediately adjacent to the large bunkhouse
live oak.
8 October The birds are now quite active and busily storing. Besides
the live Oak at the bunkhouse, considerable harvesting from
the 2º tree (Valley Oak) was taking place. After watching
them take several from there I went over and took a
sample of 4 to weigh and analyze.
17 October 900. Counted stores: Plaque tree: 533
2º tree: 59
Tel pole: ~125 (holes are almost all filled with
acorns, as they were last year).
14 November 1400. Counted stores: Plaque tree: 1700
2º tree: 187
Tel Pole: ~250
Just about everything is full here, some areas more so than
I can ever remember than being in the past. The
roost cavity in the tel. pole is completely stuffed; many
acorns are stored low in the Plague tree in bark that may
never previously have been used. These birds have been busy!
I also took a sample of acorns - about 50 - mostly from the Plague
tree and about 20 from the Telephone Pole roost hole.
21 December Saw 3521 plus at least 2 others over at MacRoberts.
