Melanerpes formicivorus
Plague
(9 April) Meanwhile, ♀522 (1st yr-Plague) is still up by herself
(and sometimes with a 2nd bird) by the Cabin in the
Blue Oak. Things were busy enough to prompt me
to put up nets, in which I caught
1-2) ♂521 with ♂♂6 (now ♂535) in Plague (former
apparently chasing the latter)
3) ♀6, now ♀536
4-6) ♂496 (Blomone), ♂523, ♂524 (School Hill).
After all this, I went back to watch:
1140. Still lots of activity. ♂473 here.
1150. ♂524 in 20 tree.
1155. ♂524 displacing ♂496. ♂496 appears to be the
primary chasee here: ♂523 here.
1215. ♂521, ♂473 up by Cabin. Both flew to 20 tree.
♂473 stayed, by ♂521 remained <5 sec. and then flew back
to the Cabin.
1220. Still appears to be 1st ♂523, ♂524 chasing ♂496.
No sign of ♂534, ♂535, or ♂536. Looks good for
the School Hill ♀♀ moving in for good.
1500. Still lots of displaying and chasing here (nets
are now down). Still ♂496 who getting chased.
1505. ! ♂496 still getting chased by everybody - nope -
♂494 here also!

1540. Finally caught a bird by hand when she
fell to the ground in a fight (♀524)! These birds
are still really going to it. It's hard to tell what's
up, since the ♂♂ seem to alternately wake to
