Melanerpes forficivorus
Lower Arnold 2
Hastings Reservation
7 April
1450. There are still stores here—in fact, I counted 100 in the front tree and 16 in back for a total of 116, which means they still must have a couple of hundred anyway. Apparently these birds (along with UA2) have managed to make it through the winter without hardly resorting to their stores at all!
26 April
Flushed 2 birds in passing, but none in any holes.
30 April
Many watched roosting here tonight, noting 3 birds, 2 of whom roosted in the high hole in the burnt Blue Oak, the 3rd of whom may have roosted in the back hole. Meanwhile, a Woodrat has apparently taken over the low hole in the Blue Oak!
1 May
Opened the low hole this evening, and found no clear sign of woodrat occupancy. At least he hasn't moved in yet!
7 May
None in any holes here in passing.
22 May
Ron reports that they have a nest in the low hole in the Blue Oak, and that the babies are just hatching!
3 June
830. Checked and put a band on the 3 babies here. These birds do still have a few acorns in the tree!
13 June
1430. Checked the nest here, finding 2 babies (who I weighed). Although ~23 d old, these kids are sadly underweight, and I decided to wait a few more days before banding them.
1515. Back to watch from the hide.
1609. 1♂ P/♀ #637 in the area.
1630. Back in the forest is 1♂ ♂ while ♂#611. Nobody's come to the nest yet, but I don't doubt that only the pair is here, leaving.
