1981 Walter D. Koenig 4 Melanerpes formicivorus Lambert Hastings Reservation (22 April) This place is a total mess at the moment! (Janet claimed to see an ub ? and a banded ? here last night, but...? Janet clarifies that she definitely saw a banded ? here (along with an ub ?), the bands of whom were ? Red LP: / ; sounds like ?583. Where are they today? 26 April 805. Watching. 820. Right away, a single unbanded ? showed up and hung around for several minutes. For a short time she was joined by a ?, also unbanded. But at least 2 other ??-both also unbanded- came by for a short time or were seen nearby; neither of these confronted the others. 840. A chase between 2 ??, apparently both unbanded. 850. Well. Suddenly there was an ub ? in the '80 nest tree and 2 ?? in the old nest tree, one of whom was ? or /pa-or #284! Then one of the ?? (the other one) left, #284 went to the top of the tree, and a 3rd bird, a ? (don't know if she was the same one as I'd seen a minute earlier, but it seems likely) was at the top with #284. Then everyone trickled off. So much for my earlier hypotheses! 920. Noone returned. Clearly I still don't know what's happening here. The ? has been replaced for sure, but what's up with the ?? is still pretty much up for grabs. 27 April 1515. Watching. 1600. Well, the action is not here today. Leaving. 30 April I clearly don't know what's up with the ?? here, but it is time to make a few changes: Purge: #632. Not seen since she was caught-
