1981 Walter D. Koenig 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Lambert Hastings Reservation (13 April) Most of the activity is in the triangle of trees between with the roost/nest holes. 1200. There are 2 ub 88 in the old nest tree chasing each other. The 2 1st yr 88 are pretty much confining their activities to last yr's nest tree and the upper Valley Oak. My guess is 12-14 birds inc 2 ub 88 and 8-10 ub 99. Still no sign of either former breeder. There is definite dominance between the 2 1st yr 88, I think with 8582>8583. 1210. Leaving for now. Looks like both parents are gone and that a new 9 is needed. A couple 88 are hoping to move in as well. So far it seems like the 2 1st yr 88 and a coalition of 99 (2 and perhaps a trio even) are in the lead, but there's much fighting still to go 1600. Still some activity, but things seem to have quieted down pretty much. While setting nets there were 5-6 birds chasing around. 1700. Caught 2 ub 88 in the net - now 88644 and 645. By the time we let them go at 1730 things were quiet. 1800. Took the nets down. Things very quiet up here. Either it's all over or everyone went home for the late afternoon. 14 April 855. Watching. 1-2 birds here; things calm. 904. Now a couple of 9 intruders. 8582 here, chasing the intruding 99. Looks like 2 ub 99 have won and have moved in.
