Melanerpes formicivorus
Lambert Hastings Reservation
9 January 1400. Flushed 2 birds when I came to set up the hide, inc.
0♂ Red/M♀ #583.
12 January 1115. Watching from hide.
1215. Going to look around. 1 bird here briefly, but it split before
I could figure out who it was.
1315. Down at Keep Out I flushed LB-Bile/M #582 from just
across on the HNHR side.
2 February 1620. Counted stores: 627 - all in the HFT. This group is not
doing well, and I sure couldn't tell you why. I also
took a sample of 40 acorns, replacing them with my own.
7 April 1310. Up in my favorite corner (between Lambert and A3 on the
knoll along the road) were several birds; identified were
an ub♀ and 6Da/or-Da#566 (from A1)
1315. Approaching Lambert proper, I flushed a♀ from the old west
tree - most likely the adult unless one of the babies is a♀
after all. Now watching.
1400. As usual, none returned. Checking stores, however,
I discovered that they are plumb out: 2. Could be a
bad year for this group, such as it is.
13 April 1130. Birds all over - a revolution! 1♂♂ Red/Maune#583.
At least 2 ub♀♀. Drumming, Garricking, The Works!
1137. Lots of ub♀♀. 2♂ Bile/LB-Bile #582.
1140. A sudden set of Alarm calls (my guess is that ≥3
birds gave alarms!). There are all sorts of ub♀♀ here;
I'd say at least 6-8. No sign of either former breeder
as yet. There is an unbanded♂ here too - Drumming in the
old west tree.
