1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomiceivorus Arnold I Hastings Reservation 1 May Bird in the hole late this afternoon. 2 May 600. Bird in hole again. 915. Opened hole: 5 eggs, not opaque. One was definitely a rint. 6 May Byron, watching the nest here, reports that 568 is a ♀ rather than a ♂. 17 May 1030. Checked the nest where they have 2 babies several (~6?) days old and 1 unhatched, infertile egg which was not the runt. 21 May Byron reports that ♀505 has apparently disappeared entirely! He last saw her on the 11th of May during a partial watch while she has now been notably absent during watches on the 18th and again today; she would thus appear to be another breeding ♂ casualty during a nesting effort: ♀505. Disappeared about 15 May 1981. (*see 9 June) 3 June 730. Banded and bled the 2 babies here as #679 and 680. 9 June Byron now reports that ♀505 has reappeared, and is not gone after all-- 25 June 1500. Counted stores: 1184! 20 July Set an ambush here at the nest hole, but only 1 bird (a baby) roosted there! 16 August 1020. Some stores remaining here.
