1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold ! Hastings Reservation 7 January 1615. 2 birds in granary; 1 is ①♀ Red/Red #567. 1625. ②♀Wn/LP#505 over in the Valley Oak at the top of the field (between A1-LA2-Bianca). 9 January 1245. Watching from hide. Looks Red 1255. ①♂ M/Dr-BL #566, ② Wn-De/M #568, ③♀ R/R #567. ④♂ "100" also here, but his bands are looking less and less like they're supposed to all the time (the "yellow" is very orangish). 1315. ⑤♀ Wn/LP #505. The 1st-yr birds, particularly ①567 and ②568, seem to be doing the most chasing of stray jockey-birds here. 1345. Leaving. Everyone here, but I still have some lingering doubts about ⑧100. 12 January ⑤566 and ⑥567 mixing with some unbanded birds at A3. See general M. formicivorus notes. 1348. ⑤586 seen over at the A3 edge of his territory. 4 February 1120. Counted stores: Main tree: 2190 2230. 2° tree: 40 I also took a sample of 50 stored acorns and replaced them with some of my own. 7 April ⑤566 seen up across the fence line; see Lambert notes. 1545. ①♀ #505 up in the top area by herself. 14 April ⑤586 seen up at Lambert; see Lambert notes. 1200. Flushed 2 birds out of the "nest" hole when I came to count stores: 1840. Doing well! Last night, by the way, we watched 4 for sure any maybe 5 birds roost in the hole. 30 April ①567 seen at UA2 - see UA2 notes.
