1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak (27 July) Hastings Reservation baby! He was a little thin and somewhat funny looking, but otherwise quite healthy - he obviously hadn't taken off too long ago. In any case, it was getting dark, so we took him home for the time being. 2 August Range: 9544. Last seen 11 Oct 1980, gone by 6 Feb 1981 → Dis. about 8 Dec. 1980 ± 2 months. Ron may have seen here on 7 Feb., however. Ron reports having probably seen her on 6/7 Feb; she was, however, gone by the time we were able to watch the nest (early June) → Disappeared about 31 March ± 1 month. 16 August 900. These birds still have lots of acorns stored, plus, the Black Oaks are essentially ripe in the area.
