1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill Hastings Reservation 14 January 1530. Counted stores: Tree 2: 1626 (inc. climbing up to hard limb and counting an additional 176 there). Tree 1: 240 1866 TOTAL Also, I removed a sample of 50 stored acorns, replacing them with some of my own. 22 January 830. For ambushed successfully up here at the (successful) 1980 nest hole, nabbing 886 (who we wanted for blood) and 9604. 8 March 1530. Nest stores or birds at School Hill "B". 15 April 1530. Counted stores: Tree 2: 857? 957. Not doing too badly. Tree 1: 100 1600. Opened the hole in the broken-off limb in the VO between the oft-used nest tree and last year's tree (the Blue Oak) where Mary saw someone this morning. Nothing inside yet! 18 April 1745. None in any holes here. 25 April 1650. Put a fake (plaster) egg in the hole with the clutch of 5 (I smashed it a little going up so it's not even as nice as it was to begin with). 30 April Purge: 9523, 9524. Moved to watched group (lower Haystack) on 6 April. 9604 definitely tried to go with them but so far apparently failing (though it's not clear if she'll return back here or not!). 29 May 915. Watching the nest. 950. Watching again. None's come yet, but there are babies in the nest. 1200. It took everyone a while to decide it was clear, but once they did the feeding rate here was downright fast. Seen were 886, 8402, 9260, 9604, and, feeding more than anyone, 9523! Compilation is separate.
