1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hartings Reservation 21 January 1530. Counted stores: Sycamore: 965 } Valley Oak: 1237 } 2202. Also took a sample of 50 stores from the Valley Oak and replaced them with some of my own. 29 March Purge: 3538. Last seen 23 July (Ron); gone by 22 Aug → Disappeared about 7 August ± 2 wks. 12 April 1730. Came out with Ron. Ron checked the hole, but nothing yet. 25 April 1030. Counted stores: Sycamore 1080 } Valley Oak: 725 } 1805. Still doing well! 4 May 1350. Weighed the 3 babies and removed the unhatched egg. All 3 had one or more scars or lesions of some sort on their back; I also had a large lump in its back similar to a blowfly. But all seemed in good shape nonetheless. 23 May 1330. Banded and bled the 3 babies, who are as fat as any I've ever seen! They are now #654-656. These birds have plenty of stores left, also. 10 June A 2nd nest is on here; see Ron's notes and the Nest Record for details. 21 June 1815. Counted stones: Sycamore 494 } Valley Oak: 266 } 760. 8 July 1030: Banded and bled the 4 babies (!) in the 2nd nest here as #707-710. 2 August Purge: 3539. Last seen 11 Feb 681, gone by 16 March → Disappeared about 1 March ± 2 weeks. 17 August 930. These birds still have some (not a lot) of stores remaining.
