Melanerpes fomiticivorus
Road!
Hastings Reservation
21 January
1615. Counted stores: Main tree: 2638
2nd Sycamore: 544
Other: 20
3202.
Doing well here. In particular, the 2nd sycamore is becoming
a good granary rather quickly, replacing a lot of the old
tree which fell.
I also took a sample of 50 acorns from the granary.
15 April
1200. Opened the new hole in the Black Oak up by the
granary, flushing a ♀ and then a ♂ in the process (from
inside the hole). The hole looks good and is definitely
usable.
16 April
605. In hide watching the hole.
635. ♀383 enters hole.
644. Looks out, then goes back down.
649. Looks out again and wales to a bird over in granary.
Goes back down. 651. Looks out, back down.
653. Looks out. 657. Leaves. Flew to granary (2 others then),
702. Getting up.
715. She did it! One rump egg in the hole, marked #1!
Now back in the hide.
747. ♀383 at hole entrance for ~1 min; left w/o entering.
Did dip in several times.
806. ♀269 sitting and preening alone in the granary. Others
have flown across the road. This is certainly the opportunity
for her!
811. ♀383 enters hole. Leaves at 813 carrying some wood chips.
821. !! ♀383 (for sure!) enters hole; flies out at 823
