1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Warp 5 Hastings Reservation 4 January Caught 88634 and 635 in holes up at Arf, too this morning. I'm not sure how to interpret it yet, but for further details see Arf, too notes. 13 April 940. Up along the road to the Arnold at A F F, too was 9 M Or-w/Blk LB #629; plus at least 1 other bird. 4 May 1700. Bird in the hole in the Black Oak here: with any luck, this is the nest. 23 May 1430. Checked the nest here (Ron discovered 3 eggs back early in May [7 May?]) and found the same 3 eggs, which had developed but had apparently been abandoned somewhere along the line. Ron also reports there being a few stored acorns here in the granary, so a lack of stores is apparently not their problem. 12 June Ron found this group's new nest here this morning; we came back at 1015 and opened it up (it's in a hard-to-see hole by the granary) 17 June Banded and biled the 3 babies up here as #702-704. 2 August Changes to be made, primarily on the basis of Ron's observations: Add: 8528 from Arf, too and 8636 from Arf, too; both presumably here for the 1st nest ~early May and thus here in April; we don't know whether they came from Arf, too or whether they were just fooling around up there when I ambushed. 8635: Purge: 8628, 8630, 9631, 9633, 8634 A more seen since banding except for last ambush These birds
