1981 Walter D. Koenig 2 Melanerpes fornicivorus Gate Hastings Reservation 28 April 600. Nothing in hole (Ron put a fake egg in here yesterday). I put in another fake egg, set up the movie camera (using time lapse, 1 frame/s), and got ready to try for pictures of egg tossing. 620. Immediately 3 birds came to the granary, hung around briefly, and then flew off together (not in a tight pack but definitely interested in one another) across the road. 730. Changed film. Just before I went up the 3 birds had been (sure-) sitting together atop the tree. First the ♀ flew off, followed about a second later by 8626, and then 2s after that by the 2nd ♂ (8627, presumably). 900. Giving up. Removed the egg. 3 May 630. 3 Birds in the hole, but still no egg; put in a fake one to try one last time to get a picture. 720. At least 2 intruders around, being soundly chased. 4 May Birds in the hole at least twice today. Surely they've finally laid! 9 May Watched roosting: the ♂ came barrel-ling in and did not really give me much time, but I think it was 3LP/DR #627. However, I wouldn't call that for sure until I watch again. (The birds do have a nest here - see Ron's notes.) 25 May 1900. Checked the nest - 3 babies. 1940. A positive ID at roosting tonight: 8627 spent the night in the nest. 26 May 1940. 8627 for sure roosted in the nest again tonight. 6 June 900. Banded and bled the 3 babies (a little early, but the PRBO class needed to see something) as #684-686.
