1981 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Gazebo Hastings Reservation 30 April Ron's report of a new unbanded ♀ here at last: Add: ♀ unbanded, Moved here (age unknown) about 25 April (here on 28 April, no sign of anything new going on as late as 22 April). Hopefully I'll nab her before long. [see following entry.] 8 May 600. An ambush here at the '80 nest hole netted 2 birds: 9570 and the unbanded ♀ (!) [roosting together no less!]. (A 3rd bird, a banded ♂, came to the hole but roosted elsewhere, and a 4th, with a high squeaky voice, flew off toward HNHR at dusk last night.) The ♀ new was banded as 9653, and will replace the unbanded bird added above. 23 May Ron has found a nest here and has been watching it, reporting that only a pair appears to be present (the new ♀ and 8516). See his notes for more details. 7 June 8571 over on the Knoll and up the 2nd canyon; see Y notes and Ron's notes. 8 June 1020. Opened the nest, confirming that it has failed (it contained 2 rather decomposed, featherless nestlings). Checking the stores, this group does have some left, but not a lot. I counted about 60 decent-looking acorns remaining in the various limbs. 18 June 845. Nobody seen here in/out of holes in passing. 28 June 830. 10 July 1900. Flushed 2 birds from the nest tree, but none in any holes. 2 August Purge: 8517. Last seen 3 March, gone by 4 April
