1981 Walter D. Koenig 7 Melanerpes formicivorus Blomone Hastings Reservation (23 May) 645. 9650 is not being obviously excluded by any of the other birds. Birds are mostly in and near the Valley Oak that the Blountwo group nested in last year (not the one back in the forest). 650. 2 birds have apparently just flown back (independently) to Blomone. Returning. 655. Now that I'm back there's again a lot of calling over at Blountwo! 715. Birds are commuting back and forth, returning to Blomone occasionally no doubt in part to fill up with acorns to eat. 720. One of the 88 and 8649 drinking from a treehole over near the large Blue Oak with the worst holes (by the path). 800. Leaving. A fair amount of activity but no solid interest in any holes. 25 May 620. Watching. At least 1 bird in each of Blomone and two trees. 626. Everyone apparently back here now. 9648, 649 here; looking for 9650 [illegible] but haven't found her yet. 700. 8492 took a brief look into the hole. 736. 8493 peeked into the hole. 815. Leaving. 88, at least, showing some interest in the holes! 27 May 625. Watching. 740. Leaving. No interest in holes today. Seen for sure were 9649, 8493, 8622, 8492. Birds still flying over to Blountwo. 1945. At roosting here 2 birds roosted in the "nest" hole (the vertical one in the trunk) and at least 2 others apparently roosted in a hole in the adjoining Valley Oak (Ron checked this hole yesterday and found a fair amount of [illegible]).
