Melanerpes formicivorus
Blomone
Hastings Reservation
19 May
610. Flushed ~4 birds from the area when I arrived. Now
watching from the Blue Oak.
634. Some dominance: 8492 was eating an acorn on a limb.
8493, after several minutes, flew over to the limb and
waited patiently (below 8492) until he flew off, at
which point 8493 hitched up to eat some of the leftovers.
At that point 8622 was there also, and sidled over
to the acorn and the other 8, but was pecked several
times by 8493.
645. I've now seen all 5 birds (8650 would indeed appear
to have returned from whence she came).
730. Quitting. Everyone here but no interest in holes.
745. Checked hole (with peeper only): still empty as best I can tell.

615. Watching. Two birds flushed from the granary when I came.
705. One of the birds just took off from the granary and flew across
the pond into Blomtwo territory, which these birds are apparently
making some use of.
745. Leaving. No obvious interest in any holes yet.
23 May
615. Watching. Several birds over at Blomtwo—going to check.
630. A veritable mini-resolution at Blomtwo. Looks like
most or all of the Blomone birds are here—including
8650! Seen are 8492, 8649, 8650, 8493,
8650 is at least hobnobbing with everyone else. What
seems to be happening is simply that the Blomone birds
are defending the area here against some intruders.
8648 here also, as is 8622 (that's all 6). None
of the "intruders" identified as yet.
